Jimmy Kimmel fought hard to keep Adam on the show. “The show fought to really try and keep [Adam], but they were told it was a bigger deal [than the show],” the source said. Also, Pink’s 2003 Billboard Awards performance where she shoved a male dancer’s face in her crotch was edited on BOTH FEEDS in the US. The video that’s been passed around is from Canada, I hear, where they aren’t so uptight about sex. via Access Hollywood.
TMZ reports that GLAAD released a statement sympathizing with ABC on the Lambert matter, “It would appear that the kiss between Adam Lambert and his keyboardist did not factor into ABC’s decision … ABC has a history of positive gay and transgender inclusion that includes featuring kisses between gay and lesbian couples on-air.” via TMZ
UPDATE: Glaad amended their original statement to clarify:
Since his American Music Awards performance occurred GLAAD has consistently advocated that Adam Lambert and openly gay artists not be held to a double standard. As we have expressed publicly, it is disappointing that ABC will not give Lambert a chance to perform at this time. GLAAD’s discussions with ABC focused on confirming that his sexual orientation was not a factor in their decisions. ABC confirmed this is not about a same-sex kiss or his sexual orientation but about being “caught off guard.” GLAAD asked ABC and calls on them for clarification on “caught off guard” so that the community knows why Lambert is being denied the opportunity to perform on the network.

By now, ABC should have had plenty of time to recover. “Caught off guard” MAY apply to their gut reaction to his appearance on GMA but, if it’s not about his sexual orientation or the same sex kiss, what then?? There’s not much left to justify this weak explanation. They take no responsiblity for exploiting the performance. There’s every other network plus cable and radio. Who cares about ABC. I don’t.
we in fandom knew about the leashes and the girl-dragging days before…didn’t they? this shock and awe would be somewhat justified if any of this were out of character (did anyone on the abc team see any vid at all from the ai tour?)…and if they hadn’t hyped the shit out of the sure-to-be shocking performance b4 each and every commercial break.
You know, as much as I was entertained by Adam’s naughty AMA debut(really glad I saved it on DVR now), I’m beginning to wish he had never done it as I hate being denied the chance to see him interviewed and perform live. My sister has some friends in Hollywood who say Kimmel is one of the nicest guys in the talk-show business(along with Conan). I am sure it is true that he tried to keep Adam. Since he and Bonnie Hunt are friends maybe he’ll be on her show. I loved the Ellen interview– so nice to see an actual conversation with him instead of the 5 second comments on all the gossip shows. I really felt that for anyone who doubted him or was “turned off” that he did a brilliant job of standing up for himself but also admitting that he understood that he might have made SOME people uncomfortable.
The ironic thing of this whole “crotch-gate” debacle is three-fold: no one has mentioned the woman who grabbed a handful of the Glambulge–that was REAL– no faking that “heft” hold or the other woman who had Adam’s hand in her crotch!
A couple of years ago on “All My Children”(ABC)one of the story lines involved a male glam rocker that was going to get a sex-change who often appeared in full drag and was in love with a lesbian…
…and finally, despite Adam’s racey stage antics and somewhat “wild” image– he has some of the best manners I’ve ever seen from a young, hot celebrity. He’s classy, thoughtful and intelligent– and if my instincts serve me well- which they ususally do– I believe he has a pure heart.
The problem with celebrity images is that we only care how things APPEAR– not how they really are.
Adam’s gonna be fine but I feel cheated. I don’t believe the American people are as uptight as the FCC thinks we are as evident by the nothing but postive crowds and ear-splitting screams that surrounded Adam follwing Crotch-gate…1500 phone calls do not speak much for a nation of millions.
Who is GLAAD, again? I’m actually worried that they are going to boot him off “Baba Wawa’s” interview now!

Will someone explain to me how the pink thing is OK and the Adam thing is not? The talent did the same thing. The differance is in the person on the censor button. It sounds like the pink act was OK because it was censored. Isn’t that a problem for the censor and not Adam.
The same act happened moments later (in Adam’s act) with a female on the stairs. It was not censored and rarely mentioned. The excuses for blackballing Adam are getting thinner. Now it seems like a personal vendetta of someone hoping to ruin his career. Someone is trying to teach Adam a lesson.
Thanks, for the explanation! BW keeps promoting her interview with HH on The View but I am still worried that ABC will cave to more pressure from the FCC and we won’t see that either!!! Have you heard anything?
I think the point of the Pink performance is, was she banned like Adam is being banned, for what she did? Don’t think so. That is a double standard.
Playing devil’s advocate – Pink’s performance was censored (according to news reports at the time) while Adam’s was not (which does make the case that it’s the censor button pushers responsibility although the networks would claim ultimately the performers shouldn’t put them in that position). I don’t know if the censor person had a fail and cut audio instead of video during adam’s performance or what.
The backlash was nil for Pink (although some would argue that because she was censored there was nothing for the average viewer to complain about – they did not see it).
I really don’t think they will pull the interview with Barbara Walters. ..she may be getting up there in age, but she still pulls a lot of weight…I’ve been watching her comments about Adam from before the AI finals and she really, really likes him. I think that’s one of reasons he was picked as one of 10 interviews. She’s very cautious in her comments but I think she’s a big supporter of him. The FCC will have a fight on their hands with BW if they pull the interview. I think the FCC has their back pushed to the wall now, and they’re going to be very cautious and thoughtful of any responses to Adam from here on out…..there’s far too many groups supporting Adam now and the FCC has some hindsight thinking to do and how to treat him!!!
I agree with you Candy, I think the person responsible for censoring did cut the audio instead. I thought the whole backlash from the Janet Jackson Superbowl nipple shot was that all live performances had to have a delay so that censoring could be done if the network thought it was needed. I guess my point is that ABC has to take some responsibility for any FCC/sponsor backlash and they have not.
I forgot to add that ABC is full of crap when they say the canceling of Adam is not because of the kiss, if that was the case why did they blur it for the west coast feed?
Hey Mitzi, AMA’s didn’t blur the west coast feed of the kiss, but the Early Show blurred the kiss.
This whole AMA backlash thing is making me sad that America (and me) is missing opportunites to see HH perform on TV. And that some of AMerica does not understand what a great down to earth, normal and sweet and extremely talented human being that he is.
And it kills me to have HH suffer through all this. And poor thing has the stomach flu! Hope Dadam and girlfriend will mend him back to health!
I will have to continue to be patient for the good things to happen. Damn it! (I have PMS so I’m not as happy today!)

The whole west coast thing was weird. I had wanted to be surprised about the AMA performance, so I didn’t go online beforehand (boy! I was surprised!) Then I went online to see everyone
That was one weird performance – visually and vocally.
I wonder what the dancer’s thought about it. Any articles about their thoughts???
