Back then, Allen was earning roughly $110 a week as a shoe salesman who sidelined as a worship leader at his local church. “We definitely weren’t rolling in money, so Katy and I only bought each other one or two presents.”
This holiday season, that’s all going to change, right? Not so fast, Allen says. “You win ‘Idol’ and everybody thinks you’re a big deal who goes around buying houses and cars, but that’s so not true.”
In fact, Allen still lives in his apartment in Conway, his wife has to drag him to go clothes shopping, and Allen still takes the low-key approach to gift-giving. “The greatest gift of all would be to spend time with Katy and my family,” says Allen, who spent last summer on a cross-country “American Idol” tour before heading immediately into the studio to record his self-titled CD, which debuted this month.

i love kris, i think he has a great album, i love his songs, i think he has a great talent and if possible, he can be marketed as another up-and-coming major songwriter in the industry. because he is really good.
but too bad, his PR management has turned him into somewhat, sorry to say, Cheesy McCheeserson.
this is not the Kris that i have known from Idol, whom we all have fallen in love during the tour, whom we scrambled to find his older works and listened to.
His PR peeps has been doing a poor job in marketing him by going down the conventional route. And it saddens me.
I am a big, big, bigggggggggggg fan of Kris and I do not want to see his big talent got wasted by poor PR by the company.
I am not merely saying this out of spite or anything. As you all may have known I am not from the US and I have been going to several record stores in the city where I lived just to monitor the sales and all (I am that big of a fan LOL and I am THAT friendly) and the feedback that I have gotten is that they displayed very little copies of his album on the shelves, people finds him boring and lack personality and whatever that people are projecting him as is pretty much blahdebleh.
This is not Kris that we have known and grown to love.
I don’t care if there will be people who flame me for saying this out loud, but i just have to do it. I don’t care if you’re closely related to him or the management or whatever, but please, do something about marketing him.
Because as of now, people seems to be getting annoyed by this campaigning done by those bigwigs. They do not hate Kris, but they are despising the campaign done by Kris’ PR team as of now and a paradigm shift needs to be done now.

In the family pic Kris does not look happy and Mama Allen looks very sad. In fact the whole family is very somber. Kris has on GMA plaid and Katy has on black nail polish (in a previous pic). Very strange.
Why are people tweeting crap to Kris? It’s not fun to do that at all. If anyone have any problem with the US weekly shoot that is not the right path to take. Tweeting shit to him like “get hold of your PR” and oher stuff is not cool at all. I feel they had a specific target they were going for with this kind of shoot. We’ve seen them give him tons of shoots that were vey simple but sexy : ALBUM COVER, SHOOTS FOR ALBUM BOOKLET, SHOOTS IN SIMON FULLERS OFFICE and many that I can’t remember.
This is for christmas holidays issue and If I’m right, I’ve seen a lot of big time celebrities featured in the US Weekly around this time with all the family thing and crap, so it’s not new. That’s kind of a christmas thing and we all know christmas does not come with that kind of sexy, edgy look. Christmas is cheesy. Moreover, Kris looks good in those photos, still lookong hot, IMO. My only problem with the article is it didn’t say much about his album but at least it was mentioned twice, so it’s okay with me.
We are all entitled to our opinions but tweeting him to let him feel like he’s a pushover and is being marketed the wrong way is too much. Let’s remember we are just fans and there are limits, otherwise we’ll begin looking like some people whose name I don’t want to mention.

Hopefully the AOL Sessions will redeem him from this cheesy PR. I don’t think he enjoyed this one bit-but he has learned to compromise, and this probably made his management team happy.
I like him promoting “Red Guitar” wine instead-now that wouldn’t be so cheesy!

I dont understand what cheesy PR stuff people are even talking about? What has HP done wrong besides not shoving a guy’s face into his crotch at an awards show? Did anyone actually expect HP to get PR by doing soemthing shocking? that is not his style. His album is pefect – ot might even be better than HH’s depending on how you judge that. HP’s pretty much every song is perfection. HH there were a couple boring/not so hot ones I feel. [but then a few REALLY exciting ones - so its hard to compare]. HP will be fine im sure.

I don’t see anything wrong with thiese photos and the article presentation at all. They definately have a theme and a target audience they are going for.
According to stats, the magazine reaches approximately 22.6 million readers throughout the country, and they don’t need to go out and buy, it’s going to be delivered with weekend newspapers. What else could one ask for?
I think it was a golden opportunity and Jive grabbed it, because with these magazines, it’s take it or lose it. They have lots of people they could feature anyway.
I sill believe HP looks hot in those photos and at the same time family-friendly, which I think was the theme they were going for, that’s the christmas holidays theme. Christmas is like the family holiday celebration and I think that is the side Kris they have to show in the article.
I think it’s all good because in the end, they would have succeeded in taking him right into the homes of 22.6 million people.
I must add that his PR team have done a good job so far, I have no complains.
ETA: Most of these 22.6 million people may not even know who Kris is. It’s a good introduction to them and they may consider picking up his album when chritmas shopping.

What is this tomfoolery? Seriously, WTF? The guy who wrote such a smart, introspective debut should not be on the cover of USA weekly with bows on his guitar. No one is saying for him to make out with Cale on stage (though I wouldn’t be adverse to this happening). He just needs to present himself as more than the aw shucks husband. He wants to be a flipping pop star. No one wants a vanilla pop star & Kris isn’t vanilla.
Kris has traveled the world, has a witty sense of humor and comes off as charming and self aware in interviews. He also wrote a really good album about failing relationships and the chase after someone unexpected. He’s way more than the nice guy from AR that his current marketing team is painting him as.
Excuse me but maybe we arent talking about the same album since there is not one boring song on Adams album! Every song is good. And bringing up the crotch grab? WTF?
Pick U up & If I Had You are not at the same level as Whataya Want From Me, Soaked or Sleepwalker. My point was that people are saying something is wrong with what HP is doing when he created an album where every single song was high quality perfection so we should just trust him. I said HH might be MORE exciting but maybe not as consitant. I dont know why people are expecting HP be like HH when he is a differnt person. if poeple are only talking about not liking GF in magazines I can agree but i expected this would be part of the whole operation. We know it just distraction – we just have to put up with it for now.
The current PR campaign suddenly and prominently featuring Katy is not offensive unless one understands (like many, many fans do) that it inaccurately depicts the man it purports to portray. The unspoken message to us: Kris’ image can be manipulated to the point that it in no way represents him, and in a way that completely insults the intelligence of a huge segment of his core fans. It is painful to watch this happen to a man whose music is so heartfelt and honest. Thanks, 19/Jive.

Thanx ginger for the sexy HP…I certainly needed that. All this recent PR is…IDK…just eewwwww. IMO, it all just seems so contrived. For me, he’s losing his edge. Let’s face it, sex appeal sells. And pj’s and boardgames aren’t particularly sexy…for me anyway. I bought his cd and I think it’s great music. I just want the piano humping, mic blowing HP back that we know and love.

We were the same people complaining that he’s not being featured on any magazines, now that they feature him, we are complaining. Christmas is cheesy , so if they want him on a holidays issue of a mag, that’s what you get. I see nothing wrong with what Kris is doing in this magazine, it is coming up to xmas, he is a good christan family man who likes traditions, he is getting portrayed as that, that is who is (among other things of course). Like Vince said maybe you want him naked on bear skin rug or something, then lets hear the complaints he is trying to be like Adam. At this point I am happy he is being ’seen’ after xmas he can get back to being the sexy little snark we know and love (the OTHER side of his personality. And yes this self entitlement thing is getting to me to Vince, fans are getting pissy cause he is not being who they want him to be. Sure I would like it to be more about his music but he has all this xmas stuff coming up (see the connection) so we will be hearing more from him and his music soon.

John Mayer is not like Kris Allen from what I have heard (personality wise, lol!)and i agree we don’t want vanilla for Kris but I think at the moment with it being Krismas and all a little bit of ‘cheese’ isn’t going to hurt too much.Now if he starts appearing in every publication like this then i will start to think differently but at the moment I appreciate just seeing his gorgeous face and knowing he is being seen by many others, roll on New Year!
Aside from these couple of Holiday-related articles in People and in USA Magazine, Kris isn’t really being marketed as cheesy and wholesome. He’s being just as funny and snarky as usual in most of his interviews.
But holiday-related stuff IS cheesy by definition. There have been all kinds of stars profiled about their favorite holiday memories or asked to share favorite recipes. This stuff doesn’t impact negatively against their images. Also, USA magazine has a circulation of more than 22 million — so if nothing else, it will expose Kris to people who probably have never heard of him. Maybe some of those 22 million will then go and listen to snippets of his album — and end up buying it!
As for GF, remember she wants to be an actress, and these red carpet things are her best opportunity to get her face out there. Also, it gives her an opportunity to spend more time with her husband — something she wasn’t allowed to do on the idol tour because of some stupid, arcane rules set out by the tour producers. Even if you don’t believe the marriage is happy or you don’t like Katy, from all accounts she has been one of kris’ biggest supporters — so wouldn’t it be unfair to begrudge her a chance to get her face and name out there so she can try and start her career?

I think the problem many of us are having with this PR campaign is the sudden firestorm of KATY… as stated in other comments, she has been conspicuously absent for a long time… most of the press she has gotten has been print articles promoting her and her desired acting career… and that’s fine… good for her…
As also stated earlier, he is not the only married celebrity… but I don’t see other celebrities being interviewed with their non-famous spouses or posing in cheesey Christmas spreads with them either… it just feels like it’s coming out of nowhere all of sudden… HARD AND FAST AND VERY NOTICEABLY…
I think it’s also offending our sensibility because (as stated before) this STEPFORD COUPLE thing his PR people are pushing doesn’t mesh AT ALL with the content of his album… and as fans, we know that Kris is an artist who writes from his feelings and experiences… so yes, the whole thing does feel VERY CONTRIVED AND FORCED…
I want Kris to be successful, and I want his fan base expanded… but people who run out to buy “wholesome stepford husband’s” album are gonna be in for very big surprise…

No one is making Katy the focus of Kris’ Marketing. Where did you se that? Christmas is about family and we all know that, so what is wrong if he talks about her being an important part of his holiday celebration? I don’t think any woman, at least not me, will miss an opportunity to walk beside her husband on the red carpet. Even people who are just dating do so and besides the red carpet and these two holiday articles, I’ve not seen Katy involved in anything Kris. So, I don’t get the focus here, or did I miss anything?
If it’s about the RED GUITAR mentions, yes, he wrote the song about his wife and according to him it’s his favourite on the album( since he solely wrote it). He is
going to talk about it forever anytime he’s asked and there’s nothing wromg with that. Rob Thomas wrote HER DIAMONDS about his wife and I suppose he will talk about it when asked.
For me, whether Katy’s presence is FORCED or CONTRIVED, I don’t think it’s our business at all. We are fans and our duty is to support him if we want by buying his music and/or attending his concerts.
I don’t think Kris is the first married artist Jive has managed, so why not let them do their job which so far, I see as being on track. Kris is not going to be on holiday magazines all the time so I believe when they have to feature him on playgirl, they know how to sex him up and we’ll all squee about it. It is even evident with the way they went about his album photoshoot and that is not the kind you’ll need for christmas holidays magazine. Let’s chill about this.
Also, if people will not buy Kris’ record because he is married, they can GTFO. Married artsts have made it in the industry, Kris is not the first!
Just for the record… no one said anything about not buying his album… we’ve all bought his album… we love his album… his album is not about a happy marriage… that’s our issue…
Also, I’m pretty sure none of the posters who have commented on this thread that are unhappy with the current PR campaign mentioned anything about wanting Kris to be like Adam… or naked anywhere… we just want him to be Kris… and we feel like “Kris” is being lost in this homogenized Stepford campaign… there is more to Kris than his MARRIAGE…

No matter what, it is uncool to do that. We all know his sales are not all that stellar and it’s causing panic amongst some if not all of us. We could hide here and agree to disagree on whatever we feel is not going on right. But to spam his PR, with complains that don’t come off polite, I must say I’m dissappointed.
