From The Village Voice

21j5bh2

This is interesting…I’d like to hear both sides. The link here also includes a letter that the editor of Out wrote about Adam. Kind of underhanded to diss him after featuring him on your cover and in the interview! From The Village Voice:

*Adam’s people were reluctant to let him appear on the cover. They only let it happen if it was a group shot, preferably including someone straight. (This even though Out was first in line, ages ago, in asking for a Lambert cover. Somehow Details was granted a crack at him first, presenting the singer caressing a barely clad woman and talking about kissing girls, though he did also manage to get in the fact that he’s gay).

*Out was urged not to make Adam too gay in the shot.

*They were also informed that Adam probably wouldn’t be able to attend an Out 100 event because they didn’t want to jeopardize his record sales.

  • Susan L says:

While I was also critical of the Details shoot and for the same reasons as the Out editor, I do find it upsetting that the gay media is consistently the MOST critical of Adam’s portrayal of gayness. He is consistently bashed for being too queeny, too queer, ugly or on the flip side, playing to women too much.

I wish they were more publicly supportive and kept their concerns to private conversations with him directly. He has enough to deal with–and I think he has handled the whole issue with incredible poise for someone who didn’t sign on to be a spokesperson for gay rights.

  • Heart says:

    Was that dis for real?

Seems unprofessional to me for an editor to say these things. What’s his problem?

  • Loha says:

i guess this goes to what i was trying to bring up in the last thread. do the other guys on the cover look “gay”? They’re also wearing suits. Is Cyndi looking straight because she’s in a dress? Wasn’t this an article about a “class” of gays hence the group shot? Michael Musto, what’s your agenda? Maybe archaic sony is playing him that way, what can HH do about it? I think he just wants to make music but he’s got alot of shit hanging on him. Some one made a funny comment after that article saying, Adam is gay? He doesn’t look gay in that shot? (joking of course) Why is Out’s editors bringing this up? He answered all your questions based on his feelings and you jump on him for that. You know what the lesson is HH, stop being honest and start lying your ass off.

  • cestlavie says:

    Dear 19 E,
Please let Kradam live their lives. Stop making Kris have to talk about his soon to be ex-wife and please stop telling Adam to say that Kris is straight. Just let them be. And stop underestimating the intelligence of the average American.
    Thank you.

  • Jfan says:

Concur Loha, What is the agenda?

  • chunkeymonkey81 says:

OMG PATTI. U R AWESOME. GAY MARRY ME RIGHT NOOOOOWWWWW!!! AHAHAHAHA

  • CowZone2 says:

I think Adam’s publicity people are making the right choices. This is the beginning of something very epic, so they need to take it slow. Once things are steady and rolling with the rest of the world, Adam can launch sky high in whatever direction he wants. Best of luck HH !

  • jellybean says:

Okay, so from the sound of it, what they really wanted from mid-way through idol was a separate issue featuring Adam. Fox/19/whoever, gave them the proverbial finger. Adam didn’t win and this guy admits he voted for the other guy. Adam manages to get a contract anyway. Is walking a tightrope with his management as a new artist, and they pretty much own his public ass. Adam has no rights to his own image. And this guy is taking him to task for not standing up to his management team, even though he says that in the interview Adam seemed unaware of any restrictions and gave a completely frank interview. He then decides to share his unhappiness regarding both Adam’s management with the world along with his unhappiness at Adam for not telling his own management that owns his ass to go screw themselves. He does this to bring up the issue of how gay magazines are not treated equally and how Adam is allowing himself to be de-gayed by his management.

My response if I were Adam: “Go fuck yourselves and see if I ever give you another interview.” You couldn’t be bothered to vote for his ass when he was on idol. And now you’re criticizing him for not being exactly what you want him to be despite admitting he gave a wonderfully frank interview.

  • PattiH says:

I agree that writing a letter like this after someone just did an amazing, open and honest interview with your magazine is extremely unprofessional. This letter is also full of wrong info, like the fact that the cover had to be a group shot with a straight person on the cover. Last years cover, for the same issue, was also a group shot and it had Katy Perry on it. “Don’t make him look too gay?” WTF does that mean? Has Out not seen the cover of his album! I will not be buying Out magazine ever.
Adam doesn’t want to be aposter boy for poltiical causes right now. he just wanst to sing his face off and I am ready! Bring it on BB!

  • Jamesen says:

This guy is full of shit!
Adam’s “people” gave the go ahead for his album cover, which was as GAY as you can get without crossing over to transgender. I do NOT mean that at all in a disparaging way, but lets face it, if they were going to put THOSE kinds of restrictions on OUT, wouldn’t they have done the same for the album cover? Maybe OUT is pissed that Adam was unable to attend their (revenue generating) party because of scheduling conflicts. Maybe they are pissed that three mainstream (code hetero) magazines had first dibs. Maybe Adam turned down this guys advances. Maybe they resent Adam’s “curiosities.” I don’t know what this guys problem is, but to undermine your own publication’s credibility because you have some kind of personal vendetta, is reprehensible. I am canceling subscription!

  • LD says:

I love that out of the 91 or so comments to the article (as of right now), 90 of them are bashing the article, the letter and the writer!

The letter and artice were way out of line! Adam did a great job on this interview and is hiding nothing! He is ashamed of nothing! He is honest, mature and most certainly GAY!

    Aaron——>

  • lmariewilson says:

This is the type of shit Adam was talking about in the interview. I know plenty of gay people that support Adam, but I guess the “gay community” doesn’t. I hate this kind of stuff. Adam gets so much shit from all sides, either he’s being too gay or not gay enough. Dear lord, let the man be.

  • adamaniac85 says:

I agree that RCA is making the right choice for Adam. He is fixing to step out into this big old world where not everyone is a hard core fan like we are and that don’t really care about who he sleeps with. There will probably be lots of pple in the general public who would be turned off from his music if he was out there trying to be a poster child for being gay. I am sure RCAs goal is to sell Adam to everyone. So they will want him to appeal to mainstream america also. I think once he is established then he can be what ever the heck he wants. Let’s face it if he wants to have a long carrer then he will need to be able to sell records to everyone not just his hard core fan base. I feel sorry for him sometimes cause when I get up in the morning It never crosses my mind that I am straight, white and female. I don’t have to read about it and be ask about it over and over. It must be hard to have pple discussing it 24/7. I sure hope that once Adam is on the AMAs and pple all over see him performing his own music that they will love and appreciate his talent as much as we all do.

  • Jae says:

I agree totally with adamaniac. Well said. :)

  • M.L. says:

    Aaron = asshole.
    Just gtfo. Who asked you?

  • Jfan says:

    Well said adamaniac95

  • M.L. says:

Just to add to that -
Let Adam be a fucking PERSON for once. There should be no he’s too this or he’s not enough of that.
And “he’s too gay” or “he’s playing with being hetero”? Come on. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

  • Loha says:

excellent point about the album cover. OMG what shit he took for that and his mngt. company let him do it. Did Musto and the editor of Out mention that or give HH props for having the guts to come out with that album cover, which he never made any apologies for. i think he wants people to look at him as a recording artist and human being and stop focusing on his sexuality. they ask questions that will get shocking responses so they can get more traffic to their sight-they KNOW what they’re doing. I’d say you just got fucked by Out Magazine HH, i hope they at least bought you dinner.

  • newswoman says:

Would they be happier if he was naked and banging another dude on the cover while Cyndi Lauper and everyone else on the cover were watching?

(That does sound hot though, doesn’t it????)

  • redsetter10 says:

Can’t we just let the gay vibe alone. Who cares? Isn’t that the point? Why can’t we let a man who is highly talented just entertain us? It just ain’t that deep, or is it? God, just let Mr. Lambert do his job and let us all benefit from the joy he will bestow. Is it more then that? I don’t think so. Or, at least, I hope not.

  • Mur says:

    ….past quote from Adam….”Sexuality is universal”!!……enough said..!!!

  • sagitariusmoon6 says:

not gay enough?too gay?oral sex with both sides?ppl are so shallow…me toois he hot?is he put on one of the greatest show you ever seen?wouldn’t mind his arms around you? src=’http://gossipcandy.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yes.gif’ />the rest is controversy and strategy to keep HH on the top.To portrait a bisexual vibe might be a genus marketing after all,but I’m shallow like many of us,and I put my neck in the trap with open eyes. The day when HH’s image stop being controversial, that is the day of the end of his carrier.

  • impunityjane says:

Hm. First he’s too straight. Then he’s too gay. Then he’s letting his management tell him what to do too much. Much as I think many people are talking out their collective *sses most of the time, here’s a devil’s advocate thought…whichever way you look at it, attention is being paid to him. This keeps him in the public eye. People will remember him. This could lead to curious people checking out his music. For example:

Scenario/ “Oh look, that’s the video for that guy that’s too gay/trying to look straight/whatever. What’s so great about his music anyways?” *presses play on Youtube video and is swept away by sheer awesomeness* /end scenario

Do I think his management is trying to “minimize his gay”? IDK. I think it would be very hard to minimize anything about HH. He also comes across as a pretty smart cookie, and I think he’s more likely to be concerned about the risk of his single being blacklisted from radio play lists because of rabid fan harassment than by the opinion of this guy or any other who thinks he’s too anything.

  • cestlavie says:

adamaniac85: I’m sorry but your post is so odd to me I’m having trouble knowing where to start.

First define “mainstream america” and why it is important to appeal to said “mainstream america”. I believe the millions of people who watched American Idol and the families with children who went to the Idol concerts and cheered for Adam ARE mainstream America. I also believe artists should be true to their art and never compromise. Adam has stated the desire to be true to his art. I support his right to express himself in any way he wants. From the beginning. Those who do do not accept him for himself now never will. In addition, artists such as Prince, Madonna and Lady Gaga have become hugely successful while remaining true to their vision.

Please explain why “he will need to be able to sell records to everyone” for a long term career. Leonard Bernstein and a myriad of avant guard and underground artists have created music for decades long careers without huge sales. Even legends such as David Bowie do not sell records that appeal to everyone.

“There will probably be lots of people in the general public who would be turned off from his music if he was out there trying to be a poster child for being gay.”
I have no idea what exactly a “poster child for being gay” is, so the only response I can offer to this comment is WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK! I am so completely shocked that people who state they are fans of Adam Lamberts actually even give a shit what the “general public” thinks anyway? I am so completely baffled by this thought process it doesn’t even compute for me.

Let Adam be Adam. I love him exactly the way he is.

  • caitie says:

All I can say is that he is so cute!!! Oh yeah, he is gay???? Who frikking cares!!!

  • sagitariusmoon6 says:

    well said CAITIE!!!

  • loghorea says:

Cest!!! I THANK YOU for saving me from having to type that out. The only thing Adam HAS to do and the only thing I EXPECT him to do is to be himself and present HIS vision. While I want him to be successful I don’t want him to be doing that by adjusting himself so as to increase his main stream appeal. What I want, and what I would think Adam would consider successful would be his music, his artistic projects and visions changing what is considered “acceptable”, making people think, making people challenge their beliefs, push their comfort zones and buttons, make them tick. that’s what art is about.
