Alana was at the AMAs and wrote up a little thing about it:
I attended the AMA show this past Sunday.  I drove from Las Vegas to see Adam (and be at Cassidy Haley’s video shoot).  I loved his performance in general. As a long time theater person, actor, director, etc., I saw a few things I would have corrected had anyone asked (they didn’t!).  After the controversy consumed the Internet and I starting reading everything.
What I have to say is, throughout the show, there was crotch grabbing a plenty, started by Janet Jackson. There were filthy words, homophobic words used by certain rappers. When I saw the replay on TV later, I couldn’t help but notice that nearly every other word was bleeped out of some “songs.”  There was more peen grabbing by the rappers than anyone could possibly count.  It was clear to me as it happened that the “face to crotch” was really “face to belt” and although it seems clear he was going for the illusion, it was not literally face to peen. But that really doesn’t matter.  Lady GaGa was way over the top, breaking glass, sitting at the piano with her legs spread wide.  There was sexual content all over the place. There really is a double standard and I applaud Adam for his attempts to break through those barriers.

There is considerably more “adult” content on TV every day, than appeared in Adam’s presentation of FYE.  It was “out the box” and over the top. And that’s who Adam is.  He will not change, nor should he.  He created a sensation and got everyone talking.  A hundred points for Adam.
